Paris Climate Change Agreement was agreed on December 12, 2015 at Paris,
France. That day 195 nations gave their
consent to the agreement after many rounds of discussions held over the
years.
It was a historic moment. The
world agreed for putting in joint efforts so that the temperature cannot rise
beyond 2 ◦C from the level of pre-industrial era.
United States of America took a leadership position for the world to
come to the agreement. Once it became reality Barak Obama, the then President
of USA had said:
“Today, the American people can be proud -- because this historic
agreement is a tribute to American leadership.
Over the past seven years, we’ve transformed the United States into the
global leader in fighting climate change’’.
In 2016, much before expected, the conditions for the agreement to
become effective were fulfilled. More than 55% countries responsible for more
than 55% of CO2 emissions handed over their official documents of consent to
UNFCCC.
Now ..fast forward to 2017….
On June 2, 2017 Donald Trump has
announced that USA is opting out of the Paris Agreement. The reasons he cited
are not able to make us understand as to why USA opted out of Paris ClimateChange Agreement?
Although the withdrawal of USA from the global agreement has not come as
a surprise to anyone. Trump has pledged in his election campaign in 2016 that
if he wins he will make USA leave the agreement.
It is very unfortunate as more than anything else we need fresh air and
inhabitable conditions for the coming generations. USA is the biggest per
capita polluter in the world. Its coming out of the agreement will certainly
have negative impacts.
Through this step, USA has joined the group of two other nations Syria
and Nicaragua who are out of this global treaty.
